Super Geo Kid un proyecto de un Padre y un hijo

SuperGeoKid was born from a question a child asked his father: ‘Why do African countries have straight borders?’ It was one of those questions that seem simple but aren’t. Nor was the question itself out of the ordinary, but their response was: instead of looking for a quick answer, we decided to find it together — thoroughly, with maps spread out on the table, and without rushing.

What began as an afternoon of shared curiosity turned into a project we’ve been building ever since. Especially when geography came up in his school curriculum.

About us

We are a father and his 12-year-old son, Borja and Sebastián, a Spanish family with a shared passion: understanding the world through geography.

Behind the father is someone who has lived in seven countries across two different continents, Europe and the Americas (Spain, the UK, the Czech Republic, Guatemala, Colombia, Portugal and Romania), an avid traveler who has visited the vast majority of countries in Europe and the Americas — around 50 countries, usually staying for long periods, not just as a passing tourist — and who has spent years reading maps for pure pleasure. For him, geography is not a subject: it is a way of understanding the world that he has practiced all his life.

Behind the son is a boy who was born in Colombia, spent his childhood in Portugal and his teenage years in Romania. I suppose that’s why, one day, he started hanging maps in his bedroom and reading geography books aimed more at adults. Then he started hanging them in the hallway. Then in the living room. Today, our house is, basically, a three-dimensional atlas.

From that combination — real-world experience and unbridled curiosity — supergeokid.com was born.

Why we believe we are qualified to do this

We are not professional geographers, and we’re not going to pretend that we are. But we are people who have experienced geography first-hand:

  • I have visited the vast majority of the countries we write about in Europe and the Americas, and some in Asia and Africa; many of them for weeks or months, not just passing through.
  • I have lived in seven different countries, which has given me a real perspective on how cultures, landscapes and borders shape the people who grow up in them.
  • I’ve spent years poring over physical, political and thematic maps — not as a work tool, but as a genuine hobby.
  • My son brings the most valuable contribution of all: the perspective of a child who is learning, who asks unfiltered questions, and who mercilessly lets us know when something is boring or unclear.

That, combined with rigorous sources and a careful review process, forms the basis of everything we publish.

How we work

Every SuperGeoKid article follows a process we take seriously:

  • We interview someone born in the country we are going to study to ensure accuracy and bring a human touch to our initial exploration of the country.
  • We draw on reliable sources: encyclopedias, official bodies, specialist geographical publications, and — where applicable — first-hand experience on the ground.
  • We adapt the language to make it understandable for children aged 8 to 14, without sacrificing accuracy or resorting to oversimplifications that distort reality.
  • We are our own strictest filter: if a 12-year-old does not find it interesting or clear, we rewrite it from scratch.
  • We update the content when the data changes — population, borders, governments, political situations. Geography is not static, and neither is our site.

Who this site is for

SuperGeoKid is designed for children and young people aged 8 to 14 who are curious about the world, and for parents and teachers looking for educational resources that are rigorous, visual and entertaining.

If you use our content in class or at home, we’d love to hear from you. Drop us a line.

Why this matters

We live in an interconnected world where understanding geography means understanding why conflicts arise, how people move, or why one country prospers whilst another does not. We believe that this understanding should begin as early as possible — and that it can also be genuinely fun.

SuperGeoKid is our small contribution. And also, quite honestly, the best project we’ve ever done together.
