The most isolated big city on the planet
Can you imagine living in the middle of the ocean? If you looked at a map of the Pacific Ocean, you would find a small group of islands almost lost between two huge continents: America and Asia. There you will find Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii.
The surprising thing is not that it is surrounded by water, but the enormous distance that separates it from any other major city. The nearest major city is almost 4,000 kilometers away. It is a distance similar to traveling from Madrid to Moscow… but throughout the entire journey you would only see ocean.
For this reason, Honolulu is often considered the most isolated big city on the planet.
An archipelago lost in the middle of the Pacific
Honolulu is part of the Hawaiian Islands, an archipelago located almost in the center of the Pacific Ocean. Although there are small inhabited islands that are even more remote, such as Tristan da Cunha, none have a comparable population. Hawaii is home to over a million people and is the most isolated widely inhabited archipelago on Earth.
For millions of years, these islands remained completely separate from the rest of the world. No land bridge connected them to other continents, and the ocean acted as a huge natural barrier. That isolation caused Hawaii to evolve in a unique way.
A natural laboratory
Today, because of this isolation, there are thousands of endemic Hawaiian species (a word meaning they only live there). However, that isolation also has a negative side. Many of those species never learned to defend themselves from predators because they simply did not exist on the islands. When humans arrived with rats, cats, pigs, and other animals, many species disappeared forever.
Hawaii is one of the places in the world where the most species have gone extinct since the arrival of humans.
A people who learned to navigate the ocean
Long before airplanes or modern ships existed, the first inhabitants of Hawaii made one of the most incredible journeys in history.
They came from other islands in Polynesia and crossed thousands of kilometers of ocean in large canoes, guided only by the stars, the Sun, ocean currents, waves, and the flight of birds. Without maps or compasses, they managed to find tiny islands lost in the largest ocean on the planet.
There they developed their own culture, with its language, traditions, and way of understanding the world.
So… Why do so many people live there?
It may seem strange that such an isolated place has come to have such a large city. The answer lies in the geography itself. The islands have a warm climate year-round, abundant water thanks to the rains caused by volcanic mountains, and very fertile land created by ancient eruptions.
But they also occupy a strategic position in the middle of the Pacific. When ships began to cross the ocean between America and Asia, Hawaii became an ideal stop to refuel, repair vessels, and stock up on food. Later, the same happened with airplanes, which used the islands as a stopover on long transpacific flights.
Today Honolulu is the largest city in the entire central Pacific and one of the main connection points between America, Asia, and Oceania.
A record with consequences
Being one of the most isolated inhabited regions on the planet is not just a curious fact. That isolation explains why Hawaii has unique animals and plants, a different culture, and such a special history.
It also explains why getting there was for centuries a true adventure and why, when it finally became a place connected to the rest of the world, it became a key piece in the routes of the Pacific Ocean.
Rarely has a geographical record influenced nature, people, and the history of a place as much as it did in Hawaii.
