Pretoria

Hab. 2,955,410

In fact, South Africa has not just one capital, but three. Pretoria is the administrative capital, Cape Town the legislative capital, and Bloemfontein the judicial capital. Unlike in most countries, the most populous city, Johannesburg, is not the capital.

Cape Town

Hab. 5,063,580

Cape Town is situated on a spectacular peninsula, right where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet! It’s famous for Table Mountain, a flat-topped mountain with incredible views, and white sandy beaches. You can also visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned!

Johannesburg

Hab. 6,444,580

Johannesburg, or "Joburg", is South Africa’s largest city. It is located in a region called Gauteng, known for its gold mining history, which is why it developed so rapidly. Situated on a high plateau, it has a subtropical mountain climate. Don’t miss the Apartheid Museum, to learn about the history, and Gold Reef City, a theme park based on the gold rush!

Knysna

Hab. 76,431

Knysna is the capital of the Garden Route. A small, picturesque town situated on a lagoon, surrounded by vast forests and mountains. It is famous for the ‘Knysna Heads’, two cliffs that guard the entrance to the sea. Ideal for water sports and exploring nature!

Central plateau

The entire interior of South Africa is a vast plateau separated from the coastal region by the Great Escarpment (mountain range). This plateau is divided into three parts: the Highveld, the most fertile and extensive part, where Johannesburg is located; the Karoo, the southernmost and most desert-like part; and the Lowveld, the lowest-lying area with the greatest diversity of wildlife. But what is a plateau? A plateau is a relatively flat area, but one that is elevated above the surrounding land.

Cape of Good Hope

The Cape of Good Hope, in southern South Africa, is one of the most important points in the historical trade between Asia and Europe. But this cape was originally named the Cape of Storms, and for good reason, as there have been more than 2,000 shipwrecks in these waters.

The Great Escarpment

The Great Escarpment, a natural wall of mountains and cliffs, dramatically separates South Africa's interior plateau from its coastal lowlands. This imposing geological feature encompasses breathtaking regions like the Drakensberg mountains, known for their rugged beauty and dramatic vistas, offering a stunning natural barrier.
