The salt city hidden underground
Imagine going down a staircase and discovering that, beneath your feet, there is another city.
There are kilometers of tunnels, enormous chambers, dark lakes, sculptures, and chapels. And the most incredible thing is that much of all this was carved directly into a very special rock: salt.
In Poland, near Krakow, lies the Wieliczka Salt Mine, a place that seems to belong to another planet. For more than 700 years, generations of miners slowly built a gigantic underground world.
A treasure underfoot
Centuries ago, salt was far more important than it is today. Before refrigerators existed, it was essential for preserving meat and fish for long periods. Having salt meant being able to store food through the winter and, for that reason, this mineral could become a huge source of wealth.
When large salt deposits were discovered beneath Wieliczka, excavations began. Miners descended underground every day to cut blocks of salt and transport them to the surface. Generation after generation, they dug deeper and deeper.
A city built underground
For centuries, the miners did not limit themselves to digging small tunnels. They created a vast network of interconnected passages and chambers. They built stairs, shafts, storage rooms, and systems for transporting the salt.
Some of the chambers are gigantic, with ceilings that look like those of a cathedral. And all of this is hidden beneath the surface. It is as if an entire city decided to build its second world beneath the first.
Salt sculptures
But there is something even more surprising. The miners themselves began using the salt to create sculptures and decorate the underground chambers. Over time, they carved figures of religious characters, historical scenes, and monuments.
The famous St. Kinga Chapel is one of the most impressive places in the entire mine. Its walls are decorated with reliefs and sculptures, and even its lamps are made from salt crystals. Entering it is like stepping into a huge church hidden inside a mountain.
A completely underground world
For hundreds of years, thousands of people worked in this world below ground. They spent hours away from sunlight, surrounded by rock and using tools to extract the mineral. Each generation continued the work that their ancestors had begun.
Little by little, their tunnels formed a gigantic labyrinth. Today, walking through some of these passages makes it possible to imagine what life must have been like for those workers who knew a world completely hidden beneath our feet.
A place from another planet?
The Wieliczka Mine belongs in the Out of this world category because it is hard to believe that a place like this was built by human beings.

Nature created the salt deposit. Then generations of miners transformed that rock into an extraordinary world.
On the surface is Poland. But below lies another city, silent and hidden, built little by little over more than 700 years.
