An adventure inside the Mayan world
First, you make your way through the jungle. Then you swim inside a cave. And at the end, you find the traces of a civilization that was there over a thousand years ago.
In Belize, there is a cave where getting to the entrance is already part of the adventure. The journey begins with a walk of about 45 minutes through the jungle, crossing streams and making your way through the tropical vegetation. But the most surprising part comes later: to enter Actun Tunichil Muknal, you have to swim through the water into the cave’s interior. And once inside, the adventure changes completely.
The jungle is just the beginning
The path crosses the tropical forest until it reaches the river that leads to the cave. You have to cross the water, keep going on foot, and finally, start swimming.
After the entrance, the journey continues inside the cave, among rock walls, water, and vast underground spaces. It is a strange sensation: you have just been walking through the jungle and, a few minutes later, you are exploring a world completely hidden underground.
A place used by the ancient Maya
But ATM holds something even more incredible. The ancient Maya began using this cave between the 3rd and 6th centuries AD. Inside, they left ceramics and other archaeological remains, as well as human remains related to the ritual practices that took place in this location.
For centuries, everything remained protected inside the cave. Today, exploring its galleries allows you to encounter these traces directly in the place where they were deposited.
The Crystal Maiden
One of the most impressive moments comes when you encounter the famous Crystal Maiden.
These are human remains that remained inside the cave for centuries. The minerals present in the environment gradually covered the bones with crystalline deposits, making them shine when they catch the light.
After swimming, walking, and advancing through the darkness, coming across this figure feels like the end of an expedition. And in a way, it is: you have reached one of the most extraordinary Mayan archaeological sites in Belize.
An adventure that must be done with care
ATM is not a cave to explore on your own. Access requires a certified guide, and visitors must know how to swim.
It makes sense: there is water, rocks, dark areas, and archaeological remains that need to be protected. Here, the adventure also involves learning to move through a place that is, at the same time, a natural cave and an archaeological site.
