The White City
The White City: the mystery of the lost city in the jungle
For centuries, the inhabitants of Honduras told a fascinating story. They said that in the depths of the immense jungle of La Mosquitia, there existed an abandoned city with large plazas, temples, and enormous stone sculptures. No one knew exactly where it was, and very few dared to venture into that jungle to look for it. Thus was born the legend of the White City, also known as the City of the Monkey God.
The jungle that swallowed a city
La Mosquitia is one of the wildest places in Central America. Its trees form a green canopy so thick that from the air the ground can barely be seen. There are mighty rivers, mountains, swamps, and a great variety of animals. In many places it is so difficult to walk that some areas have surely never been visited by humans. If an ancient city had been abandoned there more than a thousand years ago, the vegetation would certainly have hidden it almost completely. Therefore, for a long time, finding an ancient city seemed an impossible mission.
The explorers of the White City
Throughout the 20th century, several explorers tried to discover the White City. One of the best known was Theodore Morde, who in 1940 claimed to have found a mysterious city hidden in the jungle. However, he never revealed the exact location, and the mystery continued to fuel the imagination of adventurers and archaeologists.
Technology comes into action
The big surprise came many years later thanks to a technology called LIDAR. From an airplane, millions of laser pulses pass through the gaps between tree leaves and allow creating a map of the terrain hidden under the vegetation. Thanks to this technique, scientists discovered plazas, terraces, roads, and ancient settlements built more than a thousand years ago.
These discoveries showed that important civilizations lived in La Mosquitia before the arrival of Europeans. However, it is still not known whether any of those settlements actually corresponds to the legendary White City or whether the legend was born from mixing stories of several different cities.
The White City: A mystery that continues
Today, the White City remains one of the great mysteries of the Americas. We know that ancient cities existed in the jungle of La Mosquitia, but there are still huge unexplored areas. It is possible that under the trees, temples, plazas, or sculptures that no one has seen for hundreds of years are still hidden.
And you? How would you like to participate in this adventure? Perhaps you would prefer to be one of the explorers advancing with a machete through the vegetation, crossing rivers and making your way through a jungle where each step may hide a new discovery. Or maybe you are more attracted to piloting the airplane that flies over the jungle with a LIDAR system, or becoming the scientist who, in front of a computer, transforms millions of laser points into a map and discovers the silhouette of a lost city that had been hidden for centuries.
Whatever your choice, all great discoveries start the same: with a question, a lot of curiosity, and a desire to explore. Perhaps someday it will be you who finds the next city hidden under the jungle and writes a new page in history.
