Greenwich
The invisible line that changed all the maps.
If you visit Greenwich, a district located in southeast London, you will probably be surprised by one thing: there is no great mountain, no huge statue, and no spectacular landscape. However, one of the most important imaginary lines on Earth passes through that place.
It is called the prime meridian, and thanks to it we can orient ourselves with maps, use GPS, calculate time zones, and even navigate oceans where there are no roads at all. Although it cannot be seen from space, this invisible line permanently changed the way we measure our planet.
The problem of drawing the world
Several centuries ago, explorers traveled across seas and continents that were increasingly distant. They knew how to calculate latitude fairly well, that is, the distance north or south of the equator. But there was a much more difficult problem: how could they determine position east or west?
Each country used a different meridian as the starting point for making its maps. France had one, Spain had another, and other countries used different references. As a result, maps did not always match, and navigation was much more complicated.
The world needed a single reference point so that everyone could speak the same “geographic language.”
Why Greenwich?
The British Royal Observatory was located in Greenwich, where scientists had carried out highly precise observations of the sky and the positions of the stars for many years.
In 1884, representatives from numerous countries gathered at an international conference to choose a single reference meridian for the entire planet. After intense debate, they decided that the meridian passing through Greenwich would be the prime meridian.
From that moment on, all longitudes began to be measured by counting degrees east or west from that imaginary line.
A line that organizes time
The Greenwich meridian did more than change maps. It also made it possible to organize time.
Because the Earth rotates on its axis, it cannot be noon at the same time everywhere. Thanks to the prime meridian, it became possible to divide the planet into time zones, so that each region had a time adapted to the position of the Sun.
When it is noon in London, it is still early morning in other parts of the world, or evening has already arrived. Without a common system, traveling between countries or coordinating trains, ships, and airplanes would be absolute chaos.
The connected world
Today, almost no one thinks about Greenwich when they check their phone to see where they are. However, all modern navigation systems use the prime meridian as their reference point.
GPS satellites calculate positions on a global network of coordinates based on latitude and longitude. Digital maps, ship and aircraft navigators, and even many mobile phones use that same system.
Every time someone shares a location or follows a route on a map, they are using an idea that began with that imaginary line.
It changed maps
Greenwich belongs in the It changed maps category because its prime meridian allowed all countries to use the same system for representing the Earth. Thanks to it, it became possible to create compatible maps, improve navigation, and organize the time zones we still use today.
It is striking to think that a simple invisible line had such a huge effect. It did not change mountains, rivers, or borders, but it did change the way all humanity measures, represents, and understands the world. Few ideas have transformed geography as much as the Greenwich meridian.
