The Undersea Car Journey
Imagine getting into your own car in England, driving onto a train, and a few minutes later, emerging in France. You did not cross a bridge or take a boat. You traveled under the sea.
That is what the Eurotunnel makes possible, one of the most extraordinary engineering works in Europe. For centuries, the English Channel was a huge barrier between Great Britain and the European mainland. Today there is a tunnel that makes it possible to cross beneath the seabed.
An Idea That Seemed Impossible
The English Channel separates England from France by about 50 kilometers at its narrowest point. For centuries, the only way to cross it was by boat.
As early as the 19th century, some engineers dreamed of building a tunnel under the Channel. But digging for tens of kilometers under the sea was a task that seemed far too dangerous and complicated.
In the end, the British and the French decided to make it a reality. In 1988, the major construction work began.
Digging From Two Countries
The most incredible part is that the workers did not dig from a single place. One team started from England and another from France.
Gigantic drilling machines slowly advanced toward the center of the English Channel, excavating the rock beneath the seabed.
And then something extraordinary happened: after years of work, the two teams met under the sea. They had managed to join two countries by digging from opposite directions without being able to see each other for practically the entire project.
Three Tunnels Under the Sea
The Eurotunnel is not actually a single tunnel. It is made up of three large parallel passages.
Two of them are rail tunnels, one for each direction. Between them there is a third, smaller tunnel that is used for maintenance and evacuation in an emergency.
In total, the underwater rail system is about 50 kilometers long, of which nearly 38 kilometers run under the English Channel.
Your Car Enters a Train
And here is one of the most curious parts for a child.
You do not have to leave your car in England or drive through the tunnel. You arrive at the terminal with your vehicle, drive directly onto a huge shuttle train, and the train begins to move.
During the trip, you stay inside your car while the train carries you under the sea. After about 35 minutes, you come out again in your own vehicle… but now you are in France.
It is almost like putting a car into a giant elevator that crosses an entire country beneath the ocean.
A Barrier Turned Into a Road
For thousands of years, the English Channel separated Great Britain from the rest of Europe. Ships, storms, and tides made crossing it an adventure. The Eurotunnel changed that geography. Where there had once been a natural barrier, a new connection appeared between two countries.
Today, passenger and freight trains run through the tunnel every day, connecting England with France and, through the European rail network, with many other places on the continent.
A world champion
The Eurotunnel belongs to the World Champion category because its underwater section, nearly 38 kilometers long, is the longest in the world. But its true record is perhaps another: it managed to turn a barrier that for centuries seemed impossible to cross into a route that runs right beneath the sea.
Two countries dug from opposite sides, two teams managed to meet under the water, and today you can drive your car into England and come out in France. The English Channel is still up there. Only now there is a hidden route underneath it.
