Bozí Dar

Bozí Dar and Jezísek: the town that knows the secret of Christmas

Imagine discovering that Santa Claus isn’t the one who hands out the gifts in every country. In Czechia there is another character: Ježíšek, the Baby Jesus, and he has a very special office. It is in Boží Dar, a small mountain town located more than 1,000 meters above sea level, near the border with Germany. There, among forests and snow, children can send their Christmas wishes to Ježíšek.

The adventure consists of something very simple: going to find the place where the character who brings the gifts lives.

A letter for Jezísek

In Czech Christmas tradition, the gifts are not brought by Santa Claus. They are brought by Ježíšek, whose name literally means “Baby Jesus.” On the night of December 24, Czech families celebrate Christmas and wait for Ježíšek to leave the gifts under the tree.

But there is a small mystery. No one knows exactly what Ježíšek looks like. He does not have a single, official image like Santa Claus. He may appear represented as a small child, a baby, or simply remain invisible.

That makes the tradition have something magical about it: Ježíšek arrives, leaves the gifts, and disappears without anyone seeing him.

A town in the mountains

Boží Dar is located in the Ore Mountains, a mountain range situated on the border between Czechia and Germany. It is one of the highest-altitude municipalities in the country, at about 1,028 meters above sea level.

During winter, the snow completely transforms the landscape. The forests are covered in white, the houses look as if they came out of a fairy tale, and the paths can turn into genuine adventure routes. And it was precisely here that a perfect idea was born to keep the magic of Ježíšek alive.

The Christmas office

In Boží Dar there is a Ježíškova pošta, a post office dedicated to Ježíšek. During the Christmas season, children can bring or send their letters there.

The idea is fantastic because it turns a Christmas tradition into a small mission. It is not simply about writing a letter and leaving it at home. There is a real place where you can take it. You can walk through the town, look for the office, and hand in your message intended for the mysterious character who will bring the gifts on Christmas Eve.

The Jezísek Trail

But Boží Dar takes the adventure even further. In the surrounding area there is the Ježíšek Trail, a route designed especially for families and children. The route crosses the mountain landscape and has different stations related to Christmas and to the world of Ježíšek.

At these stations there are games, small challenges, and activities that turn walking through the mountains into a search. Instead of simply listening to a story about a magical character, the children go out to look for his traces.

Where Is Jezísek?

And here comes the most fun part. The goal is not to find Ježíšek hidden behind a tree. Because nobody knows exactly where he is. The charm lies precisely in keeping the mystery alive.

You can follow the trail, visit his office, send your letter, and tour the places associated with him, but Ježíšek still never lets himself be seen. Like any good gift deliverer, he appears only when everyone is asleep.

Mini Adventure

Boží Dar turns a question many children ask into a genuine outing: Who brings the Christmas presents?

In Czechia, the answer is Ježíšek. And in Boží Dar you can write him a letter, walk his trail, and visit the place where he receives his mail. Maybe you won’t manage to see him. But if you follow the clues, at least you’ll know where to start looking for him.
