Lake Hévíz
The lake that never cools down
In Hungary there is a lake that seems to defy winter. While the air can be cold and the surrounding landscape covered in snow, Lake Hévíz keeps its waters warm all year round. Water lilies float on the surface and, when it is cold, steam rises over the water, creating an almost magical landscape.
But the most surprising thing is that it is not an artificial pool. It is a natural thermal lake in which you can swim.
A lake fed from the depths
Hévíz is located near Lake Balaton, in western Hungary. Its water comes from an underground thermal spring that rises from the depths of the Earth. Hot water flows continuously into the lake and then slowly flows out, maintaining a constant renewal.
Thanks to this system, the water temperature remains pleasant even during the coldest months. In summer it can reach temperatures close to 35 °C, while in winter it usually stays around 23-25 °C. That is why, when the air is freezing, the lake can still seem like a huge outdoor hot bath.
Steam, water lilies and hot water
This is where one of the most spectacular images appears. In winter, the difference between the water temperature and the air temperature causes steam to form on the surface. And amid that mist, the water lilies continue to float.
The result seems almost impossible: a warm lake surrounded by cold, with flowers floating on the water while a cloud of steam rises slowly.
A world champion
Hévíz is not simply a famous thermal lake. It is considered the largest natural thermal lake in the world where it is possible to bathe.
Its size and its underground feeding system make it an extraordinary natural phenomenon. In addition, its waters are constantly renewed, making the lake very different from a conventional thermal pool. And all of it happens naturally.
A bath in any season
Perhaps the most surprising thing about Hévíz is that the spectacle changes completely depending on the season. In summer, the lake appears surrounded by vegetation and water lilies. In winter, steam covers the water while the landscape grows cold around it. But the lake remains warm.
Lake Hévíz proves that nature can create its own giant spa. A natural lake where you can swim in warm water while winter happens just on the other side of the surface.
