The Temple Built Without Nails
Imagine raising a huge wooden building on the side of a mountain and managing to keep it standing for centuries. Now imagine doing it without using nails or metal screws to join its main structure.
That is what makes Kiyomizu-dera so special, one of the most famous temples in Kyoto, Japan. Its great wooden terrace seems to lean out over the void, supported by an impressive structure of pillars and beams.
But the real secret lies hidden in the way all those pieces fit together.
A Giant Wooden Puzzle
Ancient Japanese carpenters developed extraordinary techniques for building wooden structures. Instead of relying on metal nails, they used carefully carved pieces that could fit into each other.
Beams, pillars, and supports were joined using wooden joinery, forming a sturdy yet flexible structure. It was like building a giant three-dimensional puzzle. Each piece had to be perfectly prepared to fit with the others.
A Terrace Over the Mountain
The most spectacular part of the temple is its famous terrace.
It is built on a hillside and rises above a set of enormous wooden pillars. From there, you can take in the landscape of Kyoto. But when you look down and see the amount of wood holding up the platform, it is hard not to wonder: How can all of this stay standing?
The answer lies in the combination of geometry, the weight of the pieces, and traditional carpentry techniques. There is no hidden modern steel structure doing the work. Wood is the star.
Building Without Nails
The absence of nails and metal screws in the main structure does not mean that absolutely no part of the temple has used metal throughout its history.
What matters is the traditional technique of its wooden structure. Carpenters used carefully designed joints to connect the pieces. Some could stay firmly held together thanks to the very shape of the wood. This made it possible to build enormous structures without relying on modern construction methods.
Why Use Wood?
Wood has a very important characteristic: it can be flexible. In an area where earthquakes occur, a completely rigid structure can suffer significant damage. Traditional wooden buildings can move slightly and absorb some of the forces.
Japanese carpenters developed techniques over centuries to take advantage of these properties. Kiyomizu-dera demonstrates just how far they came to master that knowledge.
A Temple That Has Survived
The original temple was founded over 1,200 years ago, although the current buildings are the result of various reconstructions and repairs carried out over the centuries.
That is important. When we talk about ancient buildings, it does not necessarily mean that every piece of wood we see is over a thousand years old. Traditional Japanese temples have required maintenance, replacements, and reconstructions. Conservation is part of their history.
The secret also lies in rebuilding
In Japan, there is a long tradition of preserving historic buildings through the careful repair and replacement of their elements.
When a piece of wood deteriorates, it can be replaced following traditional techniques. In this way, the building can continue to exist for generations. It is not simply about preserving every original piece forever. It is about preserving the knowledge needed to rebuild it.

Kiyomizu-dera belongs to the wonders of the world category because its spectacular wooden structure demonstrates how far traditional engineering can go. Its enormous beams and pillars form a structure that seems impossible when we gaze up at it from below.
But behind that appearance lies centuries of knowledge accumulated by generations of carpenters. You do not need steel, concrete, or modern machinery to build something extraordinary. Sometimes all it takes is wood, precision, and knowledge passed down from master to apprentice for centuries.
