What are the defining characteristics of Spain?

The country of Toreriesta
Flamenco - España

Flamenco

Flamenco is an art form that combines dance, singing and guitar playing. It is a performance brimming with passion, noise and excitement, energy and skill. No one who attends a flamenco concert remains unmoved.

Culture

Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Familia is a church in Barcelona. Gaudí was its architect and began building it in 1882. Although still unfinished, its design, as a church, is so unusual because it is a fine example of Catalan Modernism.

Architecture

Bullfighting

The bull and the man meet in the ring to fight an epic battle, a battle for their lives. Bullfighting is an ancient tradition that is not particularly well-regarded, as the bull usually has to die at the end of the fight.

Culture

The Alhambra

Spain was under Muslim rule for almost 800 years. The Alhambra in Granada is the most beautiful reminder of this period of Arab rule. It is a complex of ancient palaces, gardens and fortresses, housing fine examples of Al-Andalus art.

Architecture

Festivals

There are many different festivals in Spain. The best known are the San Fermines, where people run alongside bulls, and La Tomatina, a massive street battle in which tomatoes are used as projectiles.

Culture

Tapas

In Spain, food is a way of life, and tapas are the ultimate expression of that. Tapas are small dishes that you usually eat with your hands. They’re the perfect food for socialising.

The Pyrenees

The Pyrenees are a mountain range that runs from east to west, separating the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) from the rest of the European continent. Because of this mountain range, most of the conquests that took place between Europe and Spain, or from Spain to Europe, were carried out by sea. The highest peak in the Pyrenees is Aneto at 3,404 m. This is the third highest peak in Spain, behind Teide (Tenerife) at 3,718 m and Mulhacén (Sierra Nevada) at 3,479 m.

Strait of Gibraltar

The Strait of Gibraltar separates Europe from Africa and the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean. It is a strategic location. The narrowest point of the Strait is 14 kilometres wide. Many migratory birds use this passage during their spring and autumn migrations.

The sea

Spain, a nation embraced by the sea, finds itself surrounded by the Mediterranean, Cantabrian, and Atlantic oceans. Its maritime connection extends to territories across the water, including the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, and the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. This rich coastal heritage defines Spain's geography and its historical significance.
