Coober Pedy
The city that lives underground.
Can you imagine a city where many people live beneath the ground? It sounds like the setting of a science fiction movie, but it really exists. It is called Coober Pedy and is located in the interior of Australia. It is one of the most surprising places on the planet because most of its houses, hotels, churches, and even some shops are carved into the rock. That is why it belongs to the category of Impossible Cities, places that seem to defy logic.
A place in the middle of the desert
Coober Pedy is located in the state of South Australia, hundreds of miles from the big cities. Around it there is only desert, reddish soil, and a landscape almost without trees. During the summer, temperatures can exceed 45 °C, making it very difficult to spend many hours outdoors.
When the first inhabitants arrived in this area, they discovered something very valuable: huge deposits of opal, a precious stone that changes color with the light. Thousands of people traveled there to seek their fortune. However, they soon realized that working under that heat was exhausting and that living in a normal house was not a good idea either.
The solution was beneath their feet
The miners already spent most of the day digging tunnels to find opals. Then they had a very clever idea: if the temperature underground was much cooler, why not build their homes there as well?
Thus the famous underground dwellings of Coober Pedy, known as dugouts, were born. From the outside, many look like simple mounds of earth with a door. But upon entering, a complete house appears, with a living room, kitchen, bedrooms, and bathroom. Some are so large that they have several rooms, hallways, and even swimming pools.
The most curious thing is that inside it is always a pleasant temperature. While outside the heat can be unbearable, inside it usually stays around 23 degrees all year round, without needing to use air conditioning.
A different city
Coober Pedy not only has houses underground. There are also hotels, where visitors can sleep, carved into the rock, churches with enormous underground rooms, museums, art galleries, and some shops built in the same way.
The streets also draw attention. In many places, piles of stones that came out of the mines appear. The landscape is full of small mounds and holes that recall the intense search for opals carried out for over a hundred years.
Despite being in such an isolated place, people from many countries live there. Mining attracted workers from different parts of the world, so today very different cultures coexist in a relatively small city.
The opal capital of the world
Coober Pedy is famous because it produces a large part of the white opals sold worldwide. These precious stones reflect colors like blue, green, red, or yellow when light hits them, making them one of the most striking gems in existence.
Many visitors try their luck searching for small fragments of opal in areas where it is allowed. Although finding a valuable stone is not easy, the excitement of discovering a shimmer of colors among the rocks makes the experience very fun.
Why is it an Impossible City?
Coober Pedy seems like an impossible place because almost no major city in the world has developed underground. The normal thing is to build tall buildings, but here the opposite happened. Instead of building houses upward, its inhabitants decided to dig downward.
This idea only worked thanks to a very special combination of factors. Extreme heat made living on the surface uncomfortable. In addition, the ground was strong enough to excavate safe rooms, and the presence of large opal mines offered the perfect space to build new homes.
If we tried to copy Coober Pedy elsewhere, it probably wouldn’t work. It would require suitable soil to dig without collapsing and a major reason to live there. Without those elements, building an underground city would be much more complicated and costly.
A city that looks like another world
When you look at photographs of Coober Pedy from the air, the landscape seems like that of another planet. The earth is reddish, there is almost no vegetation, and thousands of mounds surround the city. However, beneath that seemingly empty ground lies a community full of life.
Coober Pedy shows that people can find surprising solutions when nature presents great challenges. Instead of fighting the desert heat, they learned to take advantage of the coolness underground. Thanks to that ingenious idea, one of the most original cities on the planet was born—a place that is hard to believe exists until you visit it.
