The Great Barrier Reef, located off the northeastern coast of Australia, is one of the most amazing places on the planet. At first glance, it looks like a blue sea full of small islands, but underwater it hides a world full of life. It is so enormous that it can be seen from space and spans more than 2,300 kilometers in length. No other coral reef is as large, which is why it is the true world champion of reefs.
It is located in the Coral Sea, off the Australian state of Queensland. Thousands of islands, sandbanks, and reefs form a unique landscape. Animals of all sizes live there, from tiny colorful fish to huge sharks, sea turtles, and whales that pass through the area during their migrations.
Why is it a world champion?
The Great Barrier Reef holds an impressive record: it is the largest coral reef on the planet. Its size is so enormous that it exceeds the distance between many European capitals. If you wanted to travel from one end to the other, it would take several days even traveling by boat.
Furthermore, it is not made up of a single continuous barrier. In reality, it is composed of nearly 3,000 different reefs and about 900 islands. This place is also one of the richest ecosystems in the world. Scientists have identified more than 1,500 species of fish, hundreds of types of coral, dozens of species of dolphins, sharks, rays, sea turtles, and birds. Very few places on the planet gather so much life in one space.
A forest built by tiny animals
The most curious thing is that the Great Barrier Reef is not made of rock. It is built by millions of tiny animals called corals. Each coral is very small, but it lives alongside thousands of others forming colonies. Little by little, they build a limestone skeleton that remains even when they die.
Over millions of years, new generations of corals have continued building on top of previous ones. Thanks to this constant work, the largest reef in existence has formed. It is as if millions of tiny builders had raised a gigantic underwater city.
Corals need clean water, plenty of sunlight, and warm temperatures to grow. That is why the coast of Australia offers ideal conditions. There they can develop slowly while serving as a refuge for thousands of marine animals.
A world full of colors
Diving in the Great Barrier Reef is like entering another universe. Colorful fish swim among the corals while turtles move calmly along the seabed. You can also see starfish, seahorses, and giant clams with bright blue and green colors.
At certain times of the year, humpback whales arrive to raise their young. Other times, whale sharks appear, the largest fish in the world, which can measure over twelve meters. Despite their size, they feed on small marine animals (mainly plankton) and pose no danger to people.
Many birds also use the reef’s islands to rest or build their nests. Everything is connected. If the corals disappeared, many of these animals would lose their home.
A wonder recognized worldwide
The Great Barrier Reef was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it is one of the most important natural landscapes on the planet. Each year it receives visitors from many countries who want to discover this incredible underwater world.
In addition to being a spectacular place, it helps scientists better understand how oceans work and how reefs live. Thanks to research, we know that these ecosystems are very valuable for marine life and also for people.
The giant of the reefs
Coral reefs exist in many tropical countries, but none come close to the size of the Great Barrier Reef. It is the largest known coral system and one of the largest living things on Earth if you consider the entire set formed by millions of coral colonies.
That is why it is part of the World Champions category. Its record does not depend on a building built by people or a gigantic machine. Nature achieved it, working slowly over millions of years. Thanks to those small corals, today one of the greatest natural wonders of the planet exists, and the largest reef that has ever existed.
