The giant rock that changes color
In the center of Australia there is a rock so enormous that it seems to have fallen from space. It is called Uluru and it is one of the most surprising landscapes on the planet. When the Sun rises or sets, its color changes from brown to intense red, to orange and even to purple. For this reason, many people feel that they are contemplating a place from another world.
A rock in the middle of the desert
Uluru is located in the heart of Australia, very far from the big cities. It is surrounded by an immense desert of reddish sand where there are hardly any tall trees. During the day it is very hot and at night the temperature can drop quite a bit.
The first thing that catches your attention is that the rock appears alone in the middle of a huge plain. There are no similar mountains around it. It looks as if someone had placed a gigantic stone in the middle of the landscape.
Although it looks small from afar, Uluru measures about 348 meters in height. However, that is only the part that sticks out. Scientists believe that a large part of the rock continues hidden underground, so it is much larger than what we can see.
A rock that seems to have come from space
When many people see Uluru for the first time, they have the feeling of being in front of an enormous rock fallen from the sky. Its size, its intense red color and the way it stands alone in the middle of a vast plain make it look like a gigantic meteorite that landed on Earth millions of years ago.
In reality, Uluru did not come from space. It is part of the Australian continent itself and began to form about 550 million years ago. However, its appearance is so different from the surrounding landscape that it is easy to imagine it is a huge extraterrestrial stone resting on the desert.
The rock that changes color
One of the greatest secrets of Uluru is that it never looks the same. Throughout the day, the Sun’s light changes the way we see the rock. At dawn it usually appears orange. At midday it looks more brown, and when sunset arrives, it can turn into a very intense red.
These changes occur because the minerals in the rock reflect light differently depending on the position of the Sun. That is why many people spend hours watching how the landscape gradually changes without the rock moving.
In addition, the surface of Uluru is full of cracks, caves, holes and curious shapes created by wind and rain over millions of years. Some parts look like stone waves, while others resemble enormous natural sculptures.
After a storm, something even more surprising happens. The water runs down the rock walls forming small waterfalls that only appear for a few hours. It is a very rare spectacle that few visitors are lucky enough to see.
A very special place
Uluru is not only a wonder of nature. It is also a sacred place for the Aboriginal Anangu people, who have lived in this region for thousands of years. Many caves and corners of the rock are related to ancient stories and traditions that remain important today.
Out of respect for this culture, for some years now it has no longer been allowed to climb to the top. Visitors can walk the trails that surround the rock and learn why this place has such special meaning for its inhabitants.
Why does Uluru seem to come from another planet?
Most of the terrain surrounding Uluru is quite flat. Suddenly, a gigantic rock appears, nearly 350 meters high and more than nine kilometers in perimeter. There are no mountains attached to it or other similar rocks very close by, so it stands out enormously in the landscape.
Furthermore, its color changes throughout the day. At dawn it can appear orange, at midday it takes on brown tones, and at dusk it turns a very intense red. These changes make it seem like a living rock, or even a huge object that has arrived from another place in the universe.
That is why Uluru is one of those places that seem from another planet. It is a demonstration that nature can create landscapes so incredible that they seem taken from a science fiction movie, even though they are completely real.
