The pink lake that seems impossible
Can a bright pink lake exist? Although it looks like a drawing or a computer-generated image, it is completely real. It is called Lake Hillier and is located on an island in Australia. Its color is so intense that you feel like you are on another planet. Swimming in a lake of pink waters? Is that possible?
A hidden lake
Lake Hillier is located on Middle Island, off the coast of the state of Western Australia. It is a very isolated place, surrounded by forests and very close to the ocean. From the air it offers a surprising image: a pink lake separated from the blue sea by a narrow strip of sand covered with green trees.
The lake is not very large. It measures about 600 meters long, so you can walk around it in a short time. However, its small size does not stop it from being one of the most famous lakes in the world.
Why is it pink?
For many years no one knew for sure why the water had such a striking color. Today scientists believe it is due to the combination of tiny algae and bacteria that live in the salt water. These organisms produce pigments that dye the lake an intense pink color.
The most curious thing is that the water remains pink even when collected in a bottle. It is not an effect of the sky or sunlight. The color is part of the water itself.
A landscape that seems like science fiction
When observed from an airplane or a drone, Lake Hillier looks like a huge pink paint stain. On one side is the dark blue ocean and, between them, a narrow line of white sand appears. The mix of colors is so striking that it is hard to believe it is a natural landscape.
On sunny days the contrast is even greater. The pink of the lake stands out so much that it seems as if someone had colored the landscape with a huge brush. It is an image that reminds you of the strange planets that appear in science fiction movies.
Why does it seem like another planet?
It is hard to find a landscape with such surprising colors. A pink lake next to a blue sea, surrounded by white sand and green forests, seems more like an illustration than a real place. The entire landscape is so different that many people compare it to another world.
Lake Hillier shows that nature can create scenes that seem impossible. No giant volcanoes or enormous mountains are needed to feel like you are on another planet. Sometimes a small pink lake is enough for our imagination to travel far away and make us think we have arrived at an unknown corner of the universe.
