Can you imagine traveling to a planet where the ground is covered with huge chocolate candies? Although it may sound like science fiction, there is a very similar place on Earth. It is located on the island of Bohol in the Philippines, and is known as the Chocolate Hills.
A landscape that seems unreal
The Chocolate Hills area covers about 50 square kilometers and contains between 1,200 and 1,700 hills, all very similar to each other. Some are about 30 meters high, while others can exceed 120 meters.
When viewed from a lookout point, the hills seem to stretch to the horizon. Since almost all of them have the same shape, the landscape is so strange that it is hard to believe it was created by nature.
Why are they called that?
During the rainy season, the hills are covered with thick green grass. However, when the dry season arrives, that grass loses its color and turns brown. At that moment, the hills resemble enormous chocolate candies scattered across the landscape. For this reason they received the name Chocolate Hills, although in reality they are made of rock and soil.
The color change occurs every year and makes the landscape appear completely different depending on the time of year it is visited.
How were they formed?
Scientists believe that these hills began to form thousands of years ago. The terrain is composed mainly of limestone, a type of rock that can slowly wear away by the action of water and wind.
Over a very long time, rain shaped the terrain until it created these curious rounded forms. This process is called erosion and has been responsible for many other famous landscapes around the world.
Although this explanation is the most widely accepted, experts continue to study the Chocolate Hills because it is still surprising that so many formations with such a similar appearance exist.
Why do they look like they are from another planet?
What makes this place so special is the combination of several elements. It is not just that there are many hills, but that almost all of them have the same size, the same shape, and are covered by the same vegetation.
Furthermore, in much of the area there are hardly any buildings that break up the landscape. When a person gazes at hundreds of identical hills in all directions, they get the feeling of being in a completely different world.
At sunrise and sunset, shadows make the hills appear even rounder. At those moments, the landscape becomes even stranger and more spectacular.
A unique place on Earth
There are mountains and hills in many countries, but it is very difficult to find a place where so many appear together and with such a similar shape. That is one of the reasons why the Chocolate Hills are so well-known.
Thousands of tourists and scientists visit the island of Bohol every year to see this landscape and try to understand how such a different area could have formed, unlike the rest of the planet.
From the lookout points, it is possible to observe a true sea of hills that seems never-ending. The image is so astonishing that many people claim that photographs cannot capture how impressive it is to see with their own eyes.

The Chocolate Hills prove that you don’t need to travel into space to discover landscapes that look like they are from another planet. Nature has created in the Philippines a place so strange and spectacular that it is hard to believe it is real.
Its thousands of hills, its curious color change, and its almost perfect appearance turn this corner of Bohol into one of the most surprising landscapes on Earth. Those who visit feel as if they have landed in a different world, where nature has decided to create a unique landscape unlike any other.
