I Saw a Volcano Being Born!
Can you imagine going out into the countryside one morning and discovering that, right in front of you, a volcano is being born? It sounds like a made-up story, but it really happened. In Mexico there is a volcano called Paricutín, whose birth was seen by people from the very first moment. It is the only volcano in the world whose formation could be observed from the first day until it stopped growing.
That is why visiting Paricutín is like traveling to the place where the Earth decided to create a completely new mountain before people’s eyes.
An Ordinary Day
It all began on February 20, 1943. A farmer named Dionisio Pulido was working in his cornfield near the small town of Paricutín, in the Mexican state of Michoacán. As he walked among the plants, he heard a strange noise coming from the ground. At first, he thought it was a distant earthquake. Shortly afterward, a crack appeared, and smoke, steam, and small stones began to come out of it.
Within a few hours, that hole began to grow. The ground shook, and the explosions became stronger and stronger. A volcano had been born.
A Mountain That Grew Every Day
The most incredible thing was the speed at which the landscape changed. By the end of the first day, the new volcano was already several meters high. In just one week, it had become a hill. After a few months, it had turned into a mountain visible from many kilometers away.
Over the next nine years, it continued to expel lava, ash, and rocks. When it finally stopped erupting, Paricutín had reached about 424 meters above the land around it.
Scientists were able to study the entire formation process, something that had never happened before with a volcano of this type.
The Towns That Disappeared
The lava slowly moved across the countryside and eventually covered several towns. Their inhabitants had time to leave because the lava was moving slowly, but they had to abandon their homes forever.
One of those towns was San Juan Parangaricutiro. Today, a very curious sight can still be seen there: almost the entire town was buried under volcanic rock, except for part of the church, whose tower and altar rise above the black lava.
It looks like the setting of an adventure movie and reminds us of the enormous power that nature can have.
An Adventure for Little Explorers

Today it is possible to walk through the lava fields, observe the enormous black rocks, and visit the church that was trapped among them. It is like exploring a landscape freshly created by the Earth.
