The Lake of Spots
Imagine a lake that looks as if it were painted by hand. Instead of a large expanse of blue water, you find hundreds of spots of different colors, separated from one another as if they were enormous polka dots.
It looks like a landscape from another planet. But this strange place truly exists in Canada. It is called Spotted Lake, the Spotted Lake, and it is located in British Columbia, near the town of Osoyoos.
A Lake That Changes Its Appearance
The most surprising thing about Spotted Lake is that it does not always look the same. During the summer, much of the water evaporates. Then, large concentrations of minerals and salts are left exposed, forming the lake’s characteristic spots. Each one can display different colors and shades. Depending on the amount and composition of the minerals, white, yellow, green, or bluish areas can appear.
That is why the lake seems to be constantly changing.
Where Do the Spots Come From?
The explanation lies in the water. Spotted Lake contains an extraordinarily high concentration of dissolved minerals, including magnesium sulfate, calcium, and sodium.
During the warm months, the water evaporates and the minerals become concentrated. Some areas end up forming deposits around small pools of water. From above, the result looks like a huge collection of colored circles. They are not spots painted on the lake: they are minerals left behind when the water disappears.
A Lake That Becomes a Mosaic
During winter and spring, when there is more water, the spots are much less visible. But summer arrives. The heat increases evaporation. The lake’s level drops. And little by little, the shapes that have made Spotted Lake famous appear.
It is as if the landscape were waiting for summer to reveal its true appearance.
A Special Place for Indigenous Peoples
Spotted Lake is not just a geological curiosity.
For generations, the Indigenous peoples of the region have known the lake and have considered its waters a special place. The lake’s mineral waters have been part of local traditions and medicinal uses.
That is why it is also important to approach this place with respect. It is not simply a strange landscape to photograph. It is a place with a cultural history much older than its tourist fame.
Could It Exist on Another Planet?
