The waterfalls that look like stone
In the Mexican state of Oaxaca, there is a place that amazes everyone who visits it. From a distance, it looks as if a huge waterfall has been frozen forever. The water gives the impression of having turned to rock, as if time itself had stopped. That is why, when many people arrive at Hierve el Agua, they feel as if they have landed on a different planet.
A landscape that seems impossible
Hierve el Agua is located in a mountainous area, about 70 kilometers from the city of Oaxaca. There, small springs of mineral-rich water emerge and slowly flow down the cliffs. At first glance, it seems as if the water is boiling, but that is not actually the case. What you see are small bubbles produced by natural gases rising from underground.
What is most astonishing is the appearance of the place. Over thousands of years, the water has left layers of minerals on the rocks. Gradually, those layers grew until they formed enormous white walls that look like true petrified waterfalls. It is a very rare phenomenon that can only be seen in a few places in the world.
Why does it seem like another planet?
When you look at the large white walls hanging from the cliff, it is hard to believe that they were created by simple drops of water. Their shapes resemble enormous rivers of stone that came down the mountain and remained motionless forever.
The colors also help create that feeling. The white minerals contrast with the green of the mountains and the blue sky. In some areas, yellow, orange, and greenish tones appear, produced by different minerals. The entire landscape looks like the setting of a science fiction film.
In addition, small pools of clear water have formed on the natural terraces. From there, you can look out over the valley while the edge seems to disappear into the void. It gives the impression that the pools are floating above a gigantic stone waterfall.
A very slow work of nature
The waterfalls did not form overnight. Nature needed thousands of years to build them. Each drop of water left a tiny amount of minerals as it evaporated. Over time, those small layers grew until they created the enormous walls that can be seen today.
It is a process similar to the one that forms stalactites inside caves. The difference is that here it happens outdoors and on a cliff, creating a much more spectacular landscape. Although the waterfalls appear completely solid, they are still growing very slowly.
An important place for centuries
Long before tourists arrived, the Zapotec people already knew Hierve el Agua. They took advantage of the springs and built ancient canals to carry the water to nearby farming areas. Some of those structures can still be seen today, showing the great knowledge they had of this landscape.
Today, Hierve el Agua is one of the most famous natural sites in Mexico. Scientists and travelers come to admire this unique phenomenon and learn how minerals can create such remarkable forms.
A corner that looks like it came from another world
Hierve el Agua seems like it is from another planet because it is hard to believe that nature could have built something like this on Earth. Its stone waterfalls, natural pools, and colors make anyone feel as though they are in a different world.
When a child sees this place for the first time, it is easy to think they are looking at a river of rock created by giants or a landscape from a distant planet. However, it is all real. Nature’s patience, working over thousands of years, has created one of Mexico’s most astonishing sights and one of those places that seem to defy our imagination.
