Snake Island
The island where snakes evolved isolated from the world
About 35 kilometers off the coast of São Paulo, in Brazil, there is a small island that seems to hide a secret, as visiting it is prohibited. But that is not the reason. The actual reason is something far stranger: a population of snakes that evolved there and exists nowhere else on the planet.
It is Ilha da Queimada Grande, popularly known as Snake Island.
An island that separated from the mainland
Thousands of years ago, the history of this island changed forever. Sea levels rose, and the waters eventually separated Queimada Grande from the Brazilian coast. The snakes that remained there could no longer interbreed with the populations on the mainland.
And then a massive natural experiment began. Generation after generation, over thousands of years, the snakes on the island evolved independently. The island became its own little world.
A snake that lives only here
The most famous snake species on Queimada Grande is the golden lancehead (Bothrops insularis). It is an endemic snake. That means it lives naturally only in this place. It is not found anywhere else on the planet.
Its ancestors were related to snakes that lived on the mainland, but isolation caused the island’s population to follow its own evolutionary path. Over time, it developed characteristics different from those of its mainland relatives.
A very different menu
And here appears one of the most fascinating details. On the mainland, many snakes in its group can feed on small mammals. But on a small island, things are different. Terrestrial prey is limited. In contrast, birds can reach the island.
That is why the golden lancehead developed a diet based mainly on birds. Its life is adapted to a world very different from the one that exists just a few dozen kilometers away.
A hunter adapted to the island
The snakes of Queimada Grande spend a good part of their time among the vegetation. Their feeding and behavior are related to the presence of migratory and resident birds that use the island.
To capture their prey, they have developed characteristics that allow them to tackle a type of food very different from that of many mainland snakes. Common vipers bite their prey (a rodent), release it immediately to avoid being bitten back, and then track its scent on the ground once the venom takes effect. The golden lancehead bites and does not let go of the bird. If it released it, the bird would fly away and fall dead out of its reach or into the sea, losing the meal. Therefore, it clings firmly to the prey with its mouth in the air until it dies.
It is a perfect example of how a species can change when it becomes isolated. The island not only separated the snakes from the mainland: it also changed their way of life.
Why are there so many snakes?
Queimada Grande’s fame usually centers on the enormous number of snakes it can harbor.
But what is truly interesting is not counting snakes. It is understanding why such a small island could become the home of such a unique population. With no connection to the mainland, the snakes were trapped in a limited ecosystem. For thousands of years, they had to adapt to the available resources.
A laboratory of evolution
Queimada Grande is almost like a natural laboratory. The snakes of Snake Island are the result of thousands of generations living in an isolated place. With enough time, species that exist nowhere else can emerge. An island can become a factory of new species.
An extraordinary place, but not for exploring on your own
The uniqueness of Queimada Grande also means it is not a destination for venturing out on your own. Access is restricted and requires authorization from the competent authorities.
The island is a place of enormous scientific and conservation interest. Its value lies not in confronting the snakes, but in being able to study how an isolated population has evolved over thousands of years.
From another planet
Ilha da Queimada Grande belongs to the From another planet category because it looks like the setting of a science fiction movie. A small island separated from the mainland. A species of snake that exists nowhere else. And thousands of years of evolution happening practically in its own world.
But the most extraordinary thing is that we do not need to imagine another planet to find something like this. We only need to travel a few miles out to sea and discover how isolation can turn a small island into a completely different world.
