The Kingdom of Giant Waves
There are places famous for their beaches. Others are known for their mountains or monuments. But Nazaré, a small town on the coast of Portugal, is known for something very different: here some of the largest waves on the planet form. That is why it belongs to the category of World Champions. When the ocean is at its most spectacular, the waves can be as tall as a ten-story building.
During the winter, thousands of people travel to Nazaré to see this incredible natural spectacle. Some come to take photographs, others simply to gaze at the sea. And the world’s bravest surfers come to try to ride waves that seem impossible.
Where is Nazaré?
Nazaré is located on the west coast of Portugal, on the Atlantic Ocean. It is a fishing village that for centuries lived off fishing and the sea. Its streets are full of white houses, traditional boats, and restaurants where freshly caught fish is cooked.
Although the town is quiet most of the year, everything changes when the great Atlantic storms arrive. Then the ocean awakens and offers one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the world.
Why are the waves so huge?
The answer is hidden under the water. Off the coast of Nazaré there is a gigantic submarine canyon called the Nazaré Canyon. It is like a huge valley under the sea that is over 200 kilometers long and exceeds 5,000 meters deep at some points.
When waves travel across the Atlantic and pass over this canyon, they change speed and direction. As they approach the coast, several waves join together and push against each other. The result is a giant wall of water that can reach over 30 meters in height.
This phenomenon only occurs in very few places on the planet. The shape of the seabed turns Nazaré into a genuine natural factory of giant waves.
The world champion of waves
Nazaré has achieved several world records related to big wave surfing. Some of the highest waves ever measured have been surfed here. Every winter, the best surfers on the planet wait for days for the perfect conditions to appear.
When a big storm arrives, everyone is ready. The surfers enter the water helped by jet skis, since paddling out to such a large wave would be nearly impossible. In a few seconds they can reach speeds of over 70 kilometers per hour as they descend a mountain of water.
That is why Nazaré is considered the great world champion of giant waves. No other place so frequently brings together such spectacular conditions.
A sport for true experts
Surfing in Nazaré is not like the surf we see on many beaches. Here the waves are so powerful that only athletes with a great deal of experience can attempt it. Moreover, they work as a team to help each other and have rescue teams ready in case any problem arises.
Even for the world’s best surfers, every descent is a huge challenge. The force of the water can move tons of foam and create very dangerous currents. That is why they train for years before facing these waves.
A spectacle to be enjoyed from land
The best thing about Nazaré is that you don’t have to go into the water to experience the excitement. There is a lighthouse located on a high cliff from which you can safely observe the giant waves. From there it seems as if the ocean is building mountains of water one after another.
When the waves break against the coast, they raise enormous clouds of foam that can be seen from very far away. It is such an impressive sight that many people travel just to watch it and take photographs.
The power of the ocean
Nazaré shows that nature can still surprise us. Thanks to the special shape of the seabed and the Atlantic storms, this small Portuguese town has become the place where some of the largest waves in the world are born.
That is why it is part of the Champions of the World category. It does not have the tallest building or the longest river. Its record is created by nature itself. Every winter, the ocean turns Nazaré into the stage for the greatest giant wave show on the planet and reminds everyone of the enormous power the sea can have.
